Will a non-prescription pair of glasses help my eyes if they have trouble with light?
I have a problem with lights, they hurt my eyes and give me headaches. I got a pair of tinted glasses, but they are just weird to wear, because everyone asks why I’m wearing sunglasses. I’m wondering if the glass will reflect just enough light to help. Or if there is a tint that is so little you wouldn’t notice it?? Please help!!
Have you had your eyes tested? The best thing to do is make sure there is nothing else going on that is making you sensitive to light.
About the tints – tints come in percentages so 0% is clear and 100% is totally opaque. Most sunglasses are about 80% which sounds like the ones you’ve got. If the tint annoys you, you could try a graduated tint. This is dark at the top of the lens and clear at the bottom so you won’t look all that strange. Try a tint of about 50% which would look nice in a normal pair of glasses without looking too dark.
There is also colour changing lenses. These lenses are clear indoors and go darker when you go in the sun. They are great because they adjust their darkness to the level of light and you won’t look strange indoors.
You could also try lenses with an antireflective coating. This helps with haloes around lights, night driving and computer. Whatever you decide, make sure the lenses have a UV filter on them. This will stop UV radiation from the sun entering the eye and doing damage. All lenses, even if they are tinted, have the option of an antireflective and UV coating.
A good optometrist will sell these lenses, even without prescription in them. Don’t rely on the pharmacist or petrol station glasses. At most places you can just buy the lenses and they will put them into your own glasses/sunglasses.
